Transient Guest Tax
The State of Kansas (K.S.A. 79-5301 et seq.) and Charter Ordinance No. 18 authorizes the City of Abilene to collect a transient guest tax on qualifying overnight stays. As an economic indicator, the transient guest tax provides a snapshot of the hotel accommodation industry in Abilene. Changes in the transient guest tax may be used to determine the current condition of the tourism industry in Abilene.
The City of Abilene started collecting the transient guest tax beginning in 1993. The transient guest tax was increased from 5% to 6% effective in 2009 and from 6% to 6.5% effective in July 2012. Since 2001, the City of Abilene has averaged $119,926 in annual transient guest tax collections.
