The Abilene Fire Department and Public Works Flood Control Division will begin their annual controlled burn of the Mud Creek Levee on February 25, weather permitting.

This burn is required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to control tree growth and invasive vegetation along the levee.

Burning will take place from the Old 40 bridge to the Smoky Hill River. Work will continue each day until the project is complete.

With winds expected from the south, smoke will move into Abilene at times. Residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed to help prevent smoke from entering homes.

We appreciate the public’s cooperation while this required maintenance is completed.
