Members of the Abilene Fire Department recently conducted training on extricating victims from a motor vehicle accident.
This may not be a real accident, but our firefighters have real skill!

Every emergency begins with preparation!

  • The department responds annually to over 100 motor vehicle accidents.
  • Many of the accidents require utilizing specialized extrication equipment, i.e., cutters, spreaders and rams - commonly referred to as the “jaws of life” - to remove the people trapped in the vehicle.
  • These responses require multiple personnel to complete.
  • The department responds to accidents on I-70, K-15, K-18, county roads and city streets; each of these areas presents unique challenges in safely removing people from vehicles and getting them to safety.
Thank you to John’s Service and Salina wrecker for providing the vehicles used for training.
